spring 2013 21 UBA Education Department off to a Great Start in 2013 T he UBA has a long-standing commitment to help our mem- ber banks do business better by offering a variety of timely, high quality and cost-effective conferences and events. So far this year, we have featured six live seminars and three very successful conferences each carefully designed to help bankers from entry level through executive management develop their professional and technical skills. In January, the UBA Ag Outlook and Conference kicked off with a very interesting tour of the new state-of-the art Bish- op’s Central Storehouse followed by dinner featuring John Blanchfield from ABA who provided a national perspective on what’s ahead for Ag banking. The conference, held at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, was the perfect occasion for those bankers involved in Ag lending to sit alongside their Ag customers and hear from experts on well-timed topics such as Utah’s current water situation, how to legally deal with unwanted predators, mitigating risk, and a legislative update. A highlight of the conference was the much-anticipated an- nual Ag Outlook on wheat, dairy, hay, cattle, sheep and corn provided by our good friends at Utah State University. The 2nd Annual Bank Executive Winter Conference Febru- ary 5th at the Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City was packed with two days of relevant, forward-thinking topics dealing with the economy, balance sheets, technology, succeeding in the new era of banking, regulatory issues, and much more. Back by popular demand were speakers Eugene Ludwig and Don Musso who were joined this year by an impressive lineup of experts who shared their insights and explored challenges with attendees. Featured this year was a fun evening of dining and a concert at Kingsbury Hall with jazz performer Branford Marsalis. The Bank Executive Win- ter Conference is a great companion to the UBA Convention in Sun Valley, providing for relevant business discussions and great networking opportunities. March 19th, an impressive group of emerging bank lead- ers convened at the SLCC Miller Campus for the Annual Leadership Conference. UVU President, Dr. Matthew Holland keynoted the conference followed by an array of inspirational speakers tackling topics such as preparing for uncertain times, communicating and collaborating, leader- ship ethics and navigating the consolidating industry. Now in it’s fifth year, this conference is a convergence of energy helping pave the way for new leaders to help guide the bank- ing industry into the future. Attendees walk away armed with tools to help develop good leadership talent, which is a critical resource for banks. Watch for information on more upcoming seminars and con- ferences, and join us! n
