www.uba.org 14 T he 109th Annual Utah Bankers Association Convention was held at the Sun Valley Resort in beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho June 25-28. Over 350 bankers, guests and business partners attended the event. Special thanks to Spencer White, Utah Independent Bank, who was chairman of this year’s event and his committee, Jeff Coon, Comenity Capital Bank, Jessica Fergus, Merrick Bank, Brady Fosmark, Bank of Utah, West Martin, Town & Country Bank, Peter Morgan, Zions Bank, Shaun Samp- son, State Bank of Southern Utah, Mike Watson, Capital Community Bank, Tyler Weight, BMW Bank Of North America. A highlight of the event was an active and busy exhibit hall which hosted a wide range of business partners in thirty-five booths. Bankers and families alike enjoyed the fun and inviting atmosphere while business partners had the chance to visit with bank executive management and key decision makers. On Monday, bankers were provided with a fascinating look at the economy and its relationship to productivity, provided by Scott Schaefer, Kendall D. Garff Chair in Business Administration and Professor of Finance, University of Utah. Dorothy Savarese, Chairman, President, and CEO, Cape Cod Five Mutual Company provided attendees with an update from Washington. Ms. Savarese currently serves as Chairman of the American Bankers Association. After lunch on the beautiful terrace of the Sun Valley Lodge, Adrian Gostick, bestsell- ing leadership author and organizational culture expert provided a riveting session on developing a culture of belief and building high-achieving teams. The final business session featured Trevor Dryer, Co-Founder and CEO, Mirador Tech who addressed the hot topic of Digital Dis- ruptors. Monday afternoon, bankers and their family members gathered for the always popular Bingo. Over 500 individu- als joined in on the fun. On Tuesday, after a day of recreation, Chairman Craig White hosted a Chair- man’s reception and dinner. After dinner, seven bankers were recognized with 40 Year Service awards, (see page 16), retiring board members were also recognized. The day was topped off with a Utah Bankers favorite, the “World Famous Sun Valley Ice Show, sponsored by Zions Bank Correspon- dent Banking Group. Wednesday morning featured the UBA Membership Meeting where leadership for 2017/18 was installed, including Ron Ostler, Chairman of Comenity Capital Bank was elected as UBA Chairman for the upcoming year. The convention was wrapped up with a fascinating presenta- tion to a packed audience by James Olsen, Senior Lecturer and former CIA Agent, Texas A&M University who talked about his 31-year career in the CIA. Mr. Olsen’s presentation was generously sponsored by Pacific Coast Banking School. The UBA convention continues to be a family banking tradition which provides the perfect venue for networking, business and relaxation.
