The event was held on July 24th as the shelter does not feed the homeless population on that day. Tracy Barnes, the founder of the Bleeding Hearts Foundation, heard about the homeless men and families back in 2010 and want- ed to lend a hand. The sponsors provided a holiday event for the homeless providing compassion and hopefulness to an often forgotten population. This year, over 2,000 hot dogs were served along with 2,000 bottles of water, chips, crackers and cheese, granola bars, suckers, and candy. There were approximately 4,350 personal hygiene items handed out along with 700 pairs of socks, 475 pairs of flip flops, dog kits and 215 pairs of sunglasses distributed. A vast array of gently used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, and kid’s toys were also made available. A group of approximately 65 volunteers cooked, served food, water, dessert, restocked supplies, and assisted with distributing the used clothing. 2017 STUFF THE BUS Brighton Bank joined forces with United Way during July 2017 to help by accepting contributions to provide school supplies for 1,000 local kids’. The Stuff the Bus campaign focuses on collect- ing supplies for students that are served by United Way of Salt Lake’s neighborhood centers, often located in local schools. These centers work with kids and families daily to improve students’ academic achievement and overall success. Upon completion of the campaign the school supplies are delivered, separated, counted, and then stuffed into backpacks by over 800 volunteers and deliv- ered to over 30 locations where the students will receive them. The contributed school items were valued at approximately $1,000.
